September brings a hint of cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and that unmistakable shift - fall is on its way. While we’re not quite into cold-weather mode yet, now is the perfect time to prep your plumbing for the season ahead.
A little maintenance this month can help you avoid costly repairs, frozen pipe fiascos, or surprise issues when the weather turns.
1. Inspect Outdoor Faucets & Hoses
Before it gets too chilly, go ahead and disconnect garden hoses and inspect outdoor spigots for drips or leaks.
Even a minor leak can cause problems when temperatures drop below freezing.
Tip: Keep a hose bib cover on hand to install later in the fall.
2. Check for Exposed Pipes in Uninsulated Areas
Garages, crawl spaces, and basements often house exposed pipes. These are the first to freeze when cold weather hits.
Take note of what needs insulation so you’re ready to wrap them before the first frost.
3. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Falling leaves are beautiful - until they clog your drainage system. Backed-up gutters can cause water to pool around your foundation and lead to slow leaks or basement flooding.
Tip: While you’re at it, check your yard drains too.
4. Test Your Sump Pump
Heavy rains from tropical storms or seasonal shifts can still happen this time of year. Make sure your sump pump is working by pouring water into the pit and watching it cycle.
If it doesn’t kick on - you know who to call.
5. Look (and Listen) for Early Signs of Trouble
September is a great time to check your entire home for:
Dripping faucets
Slow drains
Gurgling toilets
Water heater noises
Damp spots under sinks
Catching these issues now can save you a headache later.
